Information on the neighborhood

The birth of the San Lorenzo district dates back to the period between 1884 - 1888, beyond the Adrian walls, stretched a largely agricultural landscape.

The purpose of its construction was the edification of housing for workers who arrived in Rome at the end of the nineteenth century to support the development of the city.  Early inhabitants were indeed railroad, construction workers and craftsmen.  Hence the popular nature of the neighbourhood, reflected in the special architectural types.

In 1909, San Lorenzo entered in the master plan of the city of Rome.  The neighbourhood immediately assumed the characteristics of a working class area.

On July 19 1943, the district was the most affected by the first bombing of Rome, with the aim of attacking the freight, that is still active today.

Today, San Lorenzo is a sort of a “New York Greenwich village” where you live on a human scale.Indeed, during last years, due to the closeness to Rome’s main university La Sapienza, the district became one of the favourite day and evening location of local citizens and tourists, thanks to the pedestrian night area that allows to better enjoy its many shops, restaurants with authentic Roman cuisine and pizzerias, pubs, discos, and cultural centres of various type.
